In Decree No. 53/2018, of April 27, establishing the governing bodies of the Ministry of Employment, Universities, Business and Environment, the General Directorate of Energy and Industrial and Mining Activity, exercises the competences assigned to the Department in these matters, including renewable energies competences, energy efficiency and energy certification, energy savings and planning and energy policy, control and supervision of compliance with the legislation in industrial, energy and mining matters.

The General Directorate is organized into the following Dependent Organizational Units: General Subdirectorate for Industry, Energy and Mines, with subunits of Industry Service, Energy Service, Mining Service and the Inspection Service; the Legal, Economic and Sanctioning Service; and the Industrial and Energy Planning Service.

This General Directorate has its own objectives which are reflected in the regional energy planning: guarantee the energy supply in safety and quality conditions, promote energy savings and energy efficiency in all areas and promote the use of sustainable energy sources that contribute to the fight against climate change and to guarantee competitiveness, respecting the present well-being and that of future generations.
